Threats to biodiversity
Invasive tree threatens large parts of Kenya

The South American tree was supposed to prevent desertification and soil erosion in Kenya. Instead, it became an ecological disaster, writes The Guardian.

This is about the Mathenge tree, which was introduced to Kenya in 1948. Both the government and UN agencies encouraged its planting, but the whole thing has developed into a nightmare as the tree is one of the world's most invasive species and for this reason is sometimes called the "Devil's Tree".

Over the decades, the tree has spread across Kenya and nearly two-thirds of the country is threatened by the tree's spread.

- The spread is so rapid that entire communities have been forced to move, schools have been closed and even river flows have been disrupted, says Davis Ikiror at Veterinarians Without Borders.

Giant ship runs aground just meters from the family's house

A 135-meter-long container ship ran aground in the Trondheimsfjord in Norway early Thursday morning - and drove up onto Johan Helbergs Beach, Norwegian media reports.

Even though the family was sleeping seven meters from where the bow is now, none of them heard the roar, Helberg tells Adressa. It was only when the neighbor came and knocked that they discovered the ship.

– We were very lucky. It was not many meters from it colliding with the house, Helberg tells Adressa.

No one is reported to have been injured, and the grounding is not said to have caused any oil spill.
