Correcting information: 14,000 could starve for a year

The claim that 14,000 infants are at risk of dying in Gaza within 48 hours cannot be substantiated, writes the BBC. On Tuesday, the information was spread after UN emergency chief Tom Fletcher said it in an interview with the British television house.

The BBC has tried to get to the bottom of how he arrived at that particular figure and received a clarification from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), which writes:

"We point to the urgent need to get supplies in to save around 14,000 infants suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Gaza [...] We need to get the help in as soon as possible, preferably within 48 hours."

The UN agency highlights a report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), which states that 14,100 severe cases of acute malnutrition are expected among babies in Gaza between April 2025 and March 2026. According to the report, the process could take place over a year – not 48 hours.

According to the UN, no emergency aid has yet been distributed in Gaza, despite trucks crossing the border after the eleven-week blockade by Israel.

Israel's former prime minister: Very close to a war crime

Israel's former prime minister Ehud Olmert believes that Israel's actions in Gaza are now "very close to a war crime". He says this in an interview with the BBC.

He calls it a "war without a purpose" and says that it is clear that the fighting is claiming the lives of thousands of innocent Palestinians.

- From all points of view, this is disgusting and scandalous.

Olmert played a key role in Israel's withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, before serving as prime minister from 2006 to 2009. He has been a sharp critic of Benjamin Netanyahu in recent years.

Opposition Leader: "A Healthy Country Does Not Kill Babies"

Opposition leader Yair Golan has harshly criticized Israel's war in Gaza, according to news agencies.

- A healthy country does not wage war on civilians and does not kill babies for hobby purposes, he said in a radio interview with the public service channel Kan, according to AFP.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accuses Golan of "wild incitement" against Israeli troops.

The Golan was also condemned by opposition leader Yair Lapid

"Our warriors are heroes and defend our lives. The claim that they kill children as a hobby is false and is a gift to our enemies," he wrote in a post on X.
