Pope confirms: Opening for Ukraine talks

Pope Leo XIV wants to hold peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. This is stated by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, according to AFP.

After US Vice President JD Vance's trip to Rome, it is clear that he wants to see the newly installed Pope, Leo XIV, play an important role in world politics. Hours after the meeting, a confirmation came from the Vatican.

- I think the Pope and the entire Vatican want to be of real help and cooperate to hopefully achieve a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, says JD Vance in an interview with NBC News.

Giorgia Meloni spoke with the Pope after Donald Trump encouraged her to get confirmation that the Vatican wants to hold the talks. Meloni said that "the Holy Father is willing" and thanked him for his "unwavering commitment to peace", writes AFP.

Finnish President: Talks in Vatican next week

New talks on a ceasefire in Ukraine may take place in the Vatican next week. This is what Finnish President Alexander Stubb said in an interview with Finnish Yle. He did not provide further details about the talks but said that “discussions have been held at various levels” after Monday’s talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

Stubb also said that the US has not abandoned its role as a mediator in the conflict.

– Previously, only the US had that role, but now Europe is also involved, says the president.

Yesterday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed that the Vatican and the new Pope Leo XIV are ready to host talks between the warring parties.

Zelensky: Remaining in Kursk – putting pressure on Putin

Ukrainian forces remain in Kursk, Russia, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday evening. He said that the more Ukraine fights on Russian territory, the more Ukrainian areas can be protected.

“Unfortunately, Russia is not showing any signs of a ceasefire and is not ready to end the war,” he wrote in a statement on X.

Zelensky’s statement contradicts Russian statements about the retaking of Kursk.

Zelensky writes that it is important to put pressure on Russia, both on the battlefield and on its economy. He again calls on the outside world to impose stronger sanctions on Russia.
