With Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at his side in the Oval Office, Trump revealed his plans to build an American missile defense system inspired by the Israeli air defense missile system "Iron Dome".

The defense shield was one of Trump's campaign promises.

The system will be called “Golden Dome” and is intended to protect the entire country against ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.

“This is very important to the success and even survival of our country. It’s a very bad world out there,” Donald Trump told the press.

How much does it cost

The price tag? 175 billion US dollars, equivalent to approximately 1837 billion Swedish kronor, and is to be in place within three years by the end of the president’s term.

“Golden Dome” will also protect against space attacks.

“When fully completed, the Golden Dome will be able to repel missiles even if they are fired from the other side of the world, and even if they are fired from space,” Trump said at the press conference.

The president also says that neighboring Canada has asked to take part in the system.

Trump's plan: Golden dome air defense for 175 billion

President Donald Trump has revealed the first details of the US's future air defense - the golden dome.

Trump wants to invest a total of 175 billion dollars, equivalent to around 1,700 billion kronor, on an air defense system to protect the US from incoming projectiles and drones. Initially, the president has asked for 25 billion dollars as part of a larger budget proposal that is currently being considered in Congress.

The plan is for the system to be fully operational by the end of Trump's term, in early 2029.

- During the campaign, I promised the American people that I would build a groundbreaking missile defense shield, Trump said at a press conference in the Oval Office.

- Today, I am pleased to announce that we have officially selected the architecture for this state-of-the-art system.

Israeli inspiration

Inspiration is drawn from Israel's so-called "Iron Dome", which has protected the country's cities from rockets and other short-range projectiles since 2011. The US's protection is primarily intended for longer-range threats - ballistic missiles from countries such as North Korea, Iran, China and Russia.

- When fully completed, the Golden Dome will be able to intercept missiles even if they are fired from the other side of the world, and even if they are fired from space, Trump said.

The vision is for a ground- and space-based weapons system that will be capable of detecting and stopping threats in four stages: before launch, at an early stage, mid-flight, and in the final minutes before impact.

542 billion

The Congressional Budget Office estimated earlier this month that the space-based component alone, admittedly the most expensive, could cost up to $542 billion over 20 years.

If the system becomes a reality, it would mark the first time the United States has placed weapons in space.

The Golden Dome is still only in the concept stage, and the Pentagon has not yet determined what the system will actually be capable of. The United States already has advanced air defense systems such as the Patriot and satellites that can detect threats.
