Greece warns of new heat – fighting fires
The extreme heatwave that hit Europe earlier this week has subsided somewhat. But next week could also be very hot in many places, writes TT.
Greek authorities are warning that temperatures in the country's interior could rise to over 40 degrees. At the same time, work is underway to extinguish a large forest fire in southern Crete that has forced thousands of people to evacuate. The fight against a large forest fire is also underway on the island of Evia east of Athens.
In Rome and Madrid, temperatures are expected to be around 34 degrees on Sunday. In Mora, Portugal, which measured a record temperature of 46.6 degrees a week ago, it looks like it will be between 36 and 38 degrees in the coming days.
Scientists: New type of fires are basically unstoppable
Experts and politicians in Spain are warning of a new type of forest fires that are spreading unusually quickly and are difficult for the fire service to control, reports Dagens Nyheter.
The newspaper has spoken to Johan Sjöström, a researcher at the state institute RISE. He explains that the phenomenon of "pyrocumulus" means, among other things, that heavy smoke sucks in air from the sides.
- Once you get to a certain level, the fire becomes basically unstoppable, he tells DN.
