Explosion at gas station in Rome – nearly 30 injured
At least 27 people have been injured after a very powerful explosion at a gas station in Rome, Rai reports. However, most of the injuries are minor, but in two cases the injuries are serious.
According to La Repubblica, several police officers, volunteers and firefighters are among the injured. They were working to fight an earlier fire when the large explosion took place.
The explosion was heard in large parts of the city, writes TT.
– All the windows shook, I thought it was an earthquake, a witness in nearby Centocelle tells the newspaper.
According to the public service company Rai, the explosion occurred after a gas pump came loose from its tank.
A nearby metro station has been closed.
Meloni: “Following developments closely – expressing my support”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni writes on X that she is closely following developments after the powerful explosion in Rome on Friday morning. She writes that she is in contact with, among others, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and the local authorities.
“I express my support to all the injured – among them police officers, firefighters and healthcare workers – and extend my warm thanks to all those involved in the rescue and security work,” Meloni writes.
According to Italian media, more than 20 people have been injured in the explosion and the subsequent fire. Several buildings near the scene have also been damaged.
Pope Leo XIV has also expressed his support.
“I pray for those involved in the explosion,” he writes on X.
