Political situation in Cameroon

The world's oldest president is being challenged by close allies

The world's oldest president, 92-year-old Paul Biya of Cameroon, looks set to be challenged by former close allies in the presidential election this fall. Two of his cabinet ministers have resigned in the past week and at the same time announced their candidacy in the presidential election, several news agencies report.

These include Bello Bouba Maigari, who was the minister responsible for tourism, and Issa Tchiroma Bakary, the minister of labor.

Biya has ruled Cameroon since 1982. He has not officially announced that he is seeking re-election, but has indicated that he is considering it, writes the AP.

The autumn elections could be a new era for Cameroon

The autumn presidential elections in Cameroon could be a turning point for the country, which has had only two presidents since the country gained independence in 1960. The first was from the Muslim northern parts of the country and the second, incumbent 92-year-old Paul Biya, is from the Christian south.

Two former allies of Biya now look set to challenge him in the election. Both are from the north and their supporters believe they could represent a new political era, writes AP.

Biya would be 99 years old at the end of his next term and his ability to govern has been questioned. The challengers are both approaching 80, notes the French Le Monde.
