Middle East crisis USA vs Iran

Task: Trump said no to major attack on Iran

US Central Command developed a plan for attacks on Iran that was more extensive than the one that was later carried out, several sources told NBC News. In that plan, three additional nuclear facilities would have been attacked, in an operation lasting several weeks.

However, Donald Trump is said to have said no because it was not in line with the president's foreign policy ambitions and promises to withdraw the United States from conflicts abroad.

- We were willing to go all the way with our options, but the president did not want to, says a source.

The US instead chose to bomb three nuclear facilities in the operation that was over in one night.

US and Iranian attacks – that's the point

  • On the night of June 22, the US carried out an attack on three Iranian nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, with B-2 bombers and Tomahawk missiles.
  • According to American and Israeli authorities, the attack destroyed large parts of Iran's enrichment capacity, but intelligence from the Pentagon and European sources shows that the program was delayed but not completely destroyed.
  • Iran responded with a missile attack on the US Al Udeid air base in Qatar, where a communications building was hit but no one was injured. Iran had warned of the attack in advance.
  • Iran has stopped cooperation with the UN nuclear agency IAEA and denied inspectors access to the facilities, which has been condemned by several EU countries.
  • There is disagreement about how much enriched uranium was destroyed. Some estimates indicate that up to 60 percent of the stockpile survived the attacks.
