The world's response
Worry: Ukraine could be divided during the peace process

Several European leaders are concerned that Ukraine will be divided during a future peace process. This is something that has overshadowed the so-called reconstruction meeting in Rome, reports The Guardian.

The meeting is taking place in parallel with an escalation of Russian drone attacks.

According to calculations by the Institute for International Policy Studies, ISPI, based on World Bank figures, it would cost 188 billion US dollars to rebuild the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson. These regions could remain Russian under a future peace agreement even if Kyiv has not agreed to it.

"If Kyiv decides to give up the four regions to end the war, Russia would have to bear a large part of the reconstruction," according to ISPI.

The conference is the fourth of its kind and is attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as his German, Italian and Polish counterparts Friedrich Merz, Giorgia Meloni and Donald Tusk.

Trump: US sends weapons – NATO pays

NATO countries will pay for the US's continued arms support to Ukraine, says President Donald Trump in an interview with NBC News.

- We send weapons to NATO and NATO pays for those weapons. 100 percent.

According to him, an agreement was reached at the NATO summit in June: the US sends weapons to NATO, which then sends them to Ukraine – and pays for them.

It is unclear whether Trump is referring to an idea raised by some NATO members about buying US-made weapons on behalf of Ukraine.

US arms support to Ukraine – the issue

  • The US stopped some arms deliveries to Ukraine in early July 2025 due to reduced stocks according to the White House.
  • The decision to suspend arms surprised Ukraine and the US State Department, and drew criticism that it was actually a matter of political will.
  • On July 8, Donald Trump announced that the US would once again send more weapons to Ukraine, mainly defensive systems.
  • The US is now considering delivering a new Patriot air defense system to Ukraine, which would be the first time during Trump's presidency.
