The development of democracy in the world
Nearly half of Europe's young people doubt democracy
Only 57 percent of young Europeans prefer democracy to other forms of government, according to a new survey by Yougov according to The Guardian.
In Poland, the figure is only 48 percent, and in Spain and France around 51–52 percent. The highest level of trust in democracy is among German youth, 71 percent.
One in five can imagine authoritarian rule under certain circumstances – especially among Italians, where the figure is one in four.
The development is deeply worrying, says Åsa Wikforss, professor of theoretical philosophy, to Ekot.
– When people lose faith in democracy as a system, it can portend that democracy is going down, so this is very dangerous, she says.
The survey is based on 6,700 interviews with young people aged 16 to 26 in seven European countries.

NATO's new commander: "We are in a crucial time"
Alexus Grynkewich, who was recently appointed as the new supreme commander of NATO forces in Europe, says the alliance is ready to defend itself against threats and that it is only getting stronger and stronger. The American made his first day on the job on Friday and spoke at a ceremony in Mons, Belgium, reports Reuters.
He stressed that NATO is in "a crucial time."
- The threats we face are becoming more intertwined, but they cannot match the unity, determination and common will that I see here today, he says.
Since Donald Trump won the election, the alliance's member states have been worried that the United States will reduce its military presence in Europe. According to Grynkewich, it is too early to say exactly what will happen to American forces on the continent.
