Updated 08.50 | Published 05.10
The relationship between Elon Musk and Donald Trump remains shaky.
While the Senate is holding a marathon vote on "the big, beautiful bill", the president and the billionaire are fighting on social media.
"Without subsidies, Elon would probably be forced to close down operations and go home to South Africa," Trump writes.
Quick version
Elon Musks is furious with US President Donald Trump and the Republican Party due to Trump's extensive budget proposal that the president calls ”The Big beautiful bill”.
During the night, Swedish time, the Senate debated changes to the more than 1,100 pages of budget proposal in a long session. By 07 o'clock the senators had been working for almost 17 hours.
Musk writes on X that he will start a new party if the proposal is voted through in the Senate.
"If this insane proposal passes, I will start the America Party the next day", he writes on X.
He also writes that the United States needs an alternative to what he describes as a two-party system with Democrats and Republicans.
Elon Musk and many other critics point out that Trump's budget will greatly increase the US budget deficit.
Trump: Go home to South Africa
It didn't take long for Donald Trump to respond on his own social media platform Truth Social during the night of Tuesday.
"Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly supported me as president, that I strongly opposed the electric car mandate. It is ridiculous, and has always been a key part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but everyone should not be forced to own one," Trump writes.
"Elon may receive more government support than any other person in history - by a wide margin - and without subsidies Elon would probably be forced to close his business and go home to South Africa. No more rocket launches, satellites or electric car production, and our country would save a FORTUNE," he continues.
The relationship went sour
During Donald Trump's presidential campaign, he clearly received support from Elon Musk. After winning the election, Donald Trump appointed his gun-bearer to lead the so-called advisory body Doge.
But then something happened between the two men and the relationship quickly deteriorated.
During the spring and early summer, they have been arguing openly on social media for periods.
Among other things, Musk has claimed that Trump is involved in the investigation of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein – something he later retracted.
But Trump quickly bit back.
“Elon started to lose his grip – I asked him to pull the trigger, I removed his electric car mandate that forced everyone to buy electric cars that no one else wanted (and that he knew for months that I would remove!) – and then he went completely CRAZY!”, he writes.
