Kyiv Independent: Zelensky betrayed Ukraine for personal power
Volodymyr Zelensky betrayed Ukraine when he signed the controversial law that restricts the independence of anti-corruption agencies. This is what the Kyiv Independent's editorial page writes the day after the announcement.
"President Zelensky chooses to undermine Ukraine's democratic institutions in pursuit of increased personal power"
The bill was voted through in the Ukrainian parliament by a wide majority yesterday. Zelensky defended the decision during the night to Monday, which he believes is necessary to clear Russian influence from the authorities.

Ukraine may lose EU support after criticizing the law
Ukraine may lose EU support after the decision to restrict the independence of several of the country's anti-corruption agencies, reports DN.
The European Commission has expressed “deep concern” about the development, and the Left Party’s Jonas Sjöstedt, together with the Union’s Committee on Budgetary Control, has warned that the decision could have consequences:
– We were very clear in our criticism, which we present with concern for Ukraine. Our support is not unconditional.
The EU has previously criticized the fight against corruption in Ukraine, which risks worsening relations with Western countries.

Klitschko rages: “Destroy using war as a pretext”
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko is furious over the decision to restrict the independence of the Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities.
“Using war as a pretext, they are destroying anti-corruption work and local self-government, and silencing activists and journalists,” he writes on Telegram.
Klitschko has previously been described as a political opponent of Volodymyr Zelensky, but does not mention the president by name in his post. During the day, however, the mayor is said to have participated in popular protests against the decision in Kyiv, according to the Independent.
• President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the law the same day, which means that the authorities are now subordinate to the Prosecutor General.
• The law has been met with widespread criticism both within Ukraine and from the EU, which has warned that the decision threatens the country's democratic reforms and EU ambitions.
• Thousands of people demonstrated in Kyiv against the law and demanded that Zelensky veto it, despite the current martial law.
• Zelensky defended the law by saying that it aims to purge Russian influence, while critics say it risks reducing transparency and weakening the fight against corruption.
