Trump's USA Crime Policy

Protests against the National Guard in Washington: "Get out"

Residents in Washington, DC protested on Wednesday evening against the increased police presence in the city after the White House decided to call in the National Guard to the capital, reports the AP.

"Go home, fascists" and "Get off our streets," some protesters shouted, according to the news agency.

At the same time that the National Guard was called in, federal authorities took control of the local police department.

Analysis: The mayor couldn't say no to Trump

Democrats are at a disadvantage when President Donald Trump has let the National Guard take to the streets of Washington, DC, writes Stephen Collinson in an analysis in CNN.

He believes that the current situation reminds us that Democrats are vulnerable to the Republicans' classic law and order approach, which is used "recklessly" by Donald Trump. Collinson believes that Trump offers no serious solution.

"It is much easier to demonize criminals than to come up with real solutions. But Democrats need to come up with something before 2028," he writes.

Jonathan Allen and Megan Lebowitz write in CNBC that Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser is at a disadvantage. She has called Trump's maneuver "authoritarian", but Allen and Lebowitz believe that her criticism is milder than that of many other Democrats.

They believe that she could not practically refuse the offer. This is because she agrees with Trump on several points and wants to stay on good terms with him. One of the issues they cite as an example, which may have influenced her view of the National Guard, is the goal they have in common; to move the Washington Commanders football team's stadium back from the suburbs in Maryland to the inner city.
