Expert: No concessions from Trump on Greenland

The fact that Donald Trump seemed to downplay the threat of invading Greenland in his speech in Davos does not change the tense situation, according to an expert.

The main message from the US president is unchanged.

– He is not backing down an inch on Greenland becoming American, says Dag Blanck.

Trump made it clear that he wants to see “immediate negotiations” on an American takeover of Greenland.

The president said that the US will probably not get what it wants without using force, but he added:

– I do not want to use force. I will not use force.

Trump seems to have taken some notice of the reactions to his threatening allies with military intervention, believes Dag Blanck, professor of North American studies at Uppsala University.

– The interpretation of the speech is that he wants Greenland but that he does not intend to deploy the military, says Blanck.

– Whether he really means it, it is difficult to know.

However, it is clear that Trump continues to refuse to compromise on the fundamental issue itself.

– The most important message is that he wants Greenland.

Otherwise, Trump devoted a large part of his hour-long speech to praising his own economic policy, and touched on a number of other domestic policy issues.

– It was strikingly similar to one of his usual campaign speeches to loyal voters where he boasts about what he has achieved.

– And he is giving this to the elite of the world's politicians and businessmen in Davos. It is very different.
