French government pushes through budget without a vote in parliament

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu says he will reluctantly push through a budget without a vote in parliament on Tuesday, French media reports. He says the decision has been made “with a certain amount of bitterness.”

Lecornu says it is a failure that the budget must be pushed through without a vote and accuses the left-wing LFI party and the far-right National Rally party of sabotaging the negotiations.

The National Rally, in turn, accuses Lecornu of breaking his promise to the French people. Last fall, Lecornu promised that the government would not push through the budget without a vote.

Now the French government risks facing a vote of no confidence. The large socialist parliamentary group is indicating that it does not want to bring down the government.
