People who were "tricked" into participating in "riots" in Iran may receive lighter sentences if they surrender to authorities.
The country's police chief said this after thousands of people were killed in demonstrations that shook the country.
- Young people who unknowingly became involved in the riots are considered misled individuals, Ahmad-Reza Radan, the head of Iran's police, told state-controlled television on Monday.
He added that the promised lighter punishment only applies to those who surrender to the authorities within three days.
At least 4,500 protesters have been killed in the protests in the country, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Sunday. In addition, tens of thousands of people are reported to have been arrested.
The demonstrations critical of the regime began during the intervening days and then grew in scope, which was followed by increasingly brutal violence from the regime.
