Canada reportedly wants to send troops to Greenland
Canada is considering sending troops to Greenland for exercises with NATO, sources tell Canadian media.
Last week, several proposals were presented to the government. One of the options is to send a small group of soldiers as early as this week, according to the information.
Sources tell CBC that the government has not yet decided due to the risk of backlash from Donald Trump. Yesterday, Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries must be respected.
– We are concerned about this escalation.
Stubb: Greenland crisis takes focus from the Ukraine war
Finnish President Alexander Stubb warns that the ongoing Greenland crisis is taking too much focus from the war in Ukraine. In connection with the World Economic Forum in Davos, he says that Ukraine's allies must maintain their support.
– My biggest concern is that the pressure on the peace process for Ukraine has been overshadowed, he says, according to Yle.
He is also worried that Donald Trump will start linking the Greenland issue and Ukraine.
– We are trying to avoid that.
Stubb's concerns became reality on Monday evening when the US president, in an interview with NBC News, urged Europe to focus more on Ukraine.
– That is what they should focus on, not Greenland, says Trump.
Hungary: Greenland's future is not an issue for the EU
Greenland's future and Donald Trump's threat to the island are not an issue for the EU, says Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
At a press conference in the Czech Republic, he says that Hungary does not support any joint EU statements on Greenland.
– We see this as a bilateral issue that can be resolved through talks between the two parties, he says, according to Reuters.
Several European leaders have reacted strongly and the EU is said to be planning countermeasures if Trump takes the threat to impose tariffs on European countries seriously.
