Gavin Newsom Teaches Europe a Lesson After the Threat: “Shut Up and Show Some Backbone”
California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is urging Europe to meet Donald Trump’s threat with strength, reports Sky News.
– It’s time to step up. It’s time to get serious and stop standing on the sidelines. It’s time to stand tall, stand firm and show some backbone, he says as he arrives at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Newsom, who is being touted by many as the front-runner Democrat to challenge the Republicans in the next presidential election, dismisses the idea of trying to use diplomacy when it comes to Donald Trump.
– He’s like a T-rex: either you mate with him or he devours you, he says.
Macron burst into laughter: "We live in a stable time"
Squawks of laughter echoed in the room when French President Emmanuel Macron began his speech in Davos with a joke:
- We live in a peaceful, stable and predictable time.
In his speech, Macron, who wore sunglasses due to a hemorrhage in his eye, warned that a new world order without rules is taking shape. That "bullies" are using threatening rhetoric is outrageous.
- We are experiencing a shift towards autocracy instead of democracy, Macron said according to Swiss SRF.
US President Donald Trump is trying to weaken and undermine all of Europe with his Greenland threat, Macron continues, describing the subsequent tariff threat against Sweden and several other European countries as "completely unacceptable".
Macron also says that he has no plans to meet Trump in Davos.
von der Leyen on Trump: “When friends shake hands, it has to mean something”
If Donald Trump makes good on his threat of European punitive tariffs, the EU will fight back with a “firm, united and proportionate” response, says European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
– Arctic security can only be achieved together. That is why the proposed tariffs are a mistake, especially between long-standing allies, she says.
She points out that the EU and the US agreed on a trade agreement as late as July last year and that it must apply.
– When friends shake hands, it has to mean something.
Minister of Defense: Trump must “show his cards”
Minister of Defense Pål Jonson (M) says that Donald Trump should “show his cards” after Sky News reported that the American president may have misunderstood the purpose of the European soldiers in Greenland, writes DN.
Jonson says that the soldiers in Greenland were a Danish signal to the Americans that they want to “strengthen their deterrence capabilities”. Sweden also sent a few soldiers to Danish territory.
– It was intended as a signal from us to elevate NATO’s role in the Arctic environments, says the Minister of Defense.
Trump’s tariff threat – it’s about the point
- Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on eight European countries, including Sweden, in response to their military support for Denmark and Greenland.
- The EU and the countries concerned have responded by preparing countermeasures and stressing their support for the sovereignty of Denmark and Greenland.
- The crisis has led several NATO countries, including Sweden, France and Germany, to send military personnel to Greenland to strengthen security.
- Opinion polls show that a majority of Americans oppose a US takeover of Greenland, while Republican voters are divided on the issue.
- The conflict has raised concerns about a trade war between the US and the EU and weakened trust between Western allies, while Russia and China are seen as benefiting from the division.
