Denmark wants to see NATO operation in Greenland after threat
Denmark and Greenland want to see a NATO operation on the island. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt presented the proposal to Secretary General Mark Rutte at a meeting about the threat from Trump, they announced at a press conference.
- Hopefully we can find a framework for how this can be implemented, says Lund Poulsen according to Danish media.
He did not mention any details and there is no information about what Mark Rutte thinks of the idea.
This weekend, several European countries sent soldiers to support the Danish-led exercise "Arctic Endurance".
Danish soldiers land in Greenland - major on site
On Monday evening, an aircraft with several Danish soldiers landed in Greenland, Danish media reported. The soldiers will participate in the Danish exercise "Arctic Endurance", which according to TV2 has been intensified after Donald Trump's threat to the island.
DR's defense correspondent Mads Korsager believes that the seriousness of the situation is underlined by the fact that Major Peter Boysen was on the plane that landed in the capital Nuuk.
- Normally, a Danish major does not have much to do in Greenland, because that is not where their normal duties lie, he says.
Task: Trump admits that he may have misunderstood the purpose of the soldiers
In Sunday's phone call between Donald Trump and Keir Starmer, the American president is said to have admitted that he "may have been misinformed" about the purpose of sending European soldiers to Greenland, according to information to Sky News.
In his post about new tariffs against Europe this weekend, the president wrote that soldiers were sent to Greenland "for unclear reasons". He pointed out eight countries that have sent military personnel to the island. The European countries have responded by emphasizing that the military presence is aimed at strengthening security around the Arctic.
On Monday, Denmark announced that more soldiers will be sent to Greenland. Sweden also has soldiers on site on Danish territory.
Trump repeats accusations against Norway: “They must be controlling the peace prize”
Donald Trump continues to blame Norway for not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, even though it is the independent Nobel Committee that awards the prize and not the Norwegian government.
– Norway controls it, no matter what they say, the president falsely claims in a new interview with NBC News.
Trump has sent a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in which he writes that the fact that “Norway did not give him the Nobel Prize” means that he no longer feels obligated to “only think about peace.”
In the interview with NBC News, Trump also dodges questions about whether he intends to take military action against Greenland to take over the island.
– No comment, he says.
