The Thai Government House official said that the Thai premier's visit was meant to be brief "as possible so that she could just introduce herself, and not to tackle any matters of import", the Thailand daily reported on Thursday.
Brunei's Information Department yesterday requested local media here to register the names of those who will cover Yingluck's arrival, scheduled at 7pm, at the Brunei International Airport in Berakas. Media coverage was also requested for an audience with His Majesty as well as a Santap Malam (dinner banquet) held for the visiting prime minister at the Istana Nurul Iman. Yingluck was also scheduled to depart from Brunei later this evening, but no time was specified.
"Yingluck will spend only a few hours on Saturday in Bandar Seri Begawan to have dinner with the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, and to introduce herself as the new PM," The Nation said.
The paper added that the Thai Foreign Ministry has prepared "some points for Yingluck to raise in her meeting with Brunei leaders", which were focused on fostering closer bilateral diplomatic relations.
"The most important message to be imparted during the short visit is to express gratitude to Brunei for supporting Thailand in international forums, notably in international Islamic organisations, the official said."
Regional cooperation as Asean member states will also be discussed during the Thailand-Brunei meeting.
Previously, Thailand's Ambassador-designate to Brunei Darussalam Apichart Phetcharatana said Yingluckwill be accompanied by a high-level delegation that would include Foreign Minister SurapongTovichakchaik.
"The prime minister will be here, where discussions will be held on trade and investments of mutual interest, bilateral relations and cooperation as Asean member countries," Apichart said.
Brunei will be the first of the Asean member states to receive the new premier. The Nation said that this was because the Sultanate was the first of the countries to respond and say that they were ready to host a visit by the Thai leader.
"We contacted many countries in Asean about the prime minister making her first visit, but only Brunei replied quickly to confirm that its leaders were free to welcome Prime Minister Yingluck after the fasting month of Ramadhan," the Government House official was quoted as saying.
After visiting Brunei, Yingluck is scheduled to go to Indonesia for a similar introductory visit on Monday and to Cambodia on September 15. Her official visits to the Asean nations were meant to be in alphabetical order but the schedules of Yingluck's counterparts in some of the countries did not make this possible.
Brunei hosted a similar one-day official visit by Yingluck's predecessor Abhisit Vejjajiva in March last year.
