New elections in Canada
Canadians are bombarded with right-wing material from the US

A network of coordinated accounts on X is bombarding Canadians with right-wing material, shows an analysis of more than 350,000 political posts on the platform conducted by the Financial Times together with the University of Southern California.

Around 80 percent of the posts either show support for Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre or criticize Liberal Mark Carney. A large part of the posts come from what are suspected to be bots and Carney is repeatedly smeared with unfounded claims.

Elections Canada has previously warned that China, India and Russia may try to influence the outcome of the election. However, the newspaper's analysis shows that the majority of the influence comes from the US.

- The US has always been a major exporter of information to Canada, but in recent years an enormous amount of disinformation has come from the US, says Aengus Bridgman, director of the Media Ecosystem Observatory at McGill University in Montreal.

It is not clear who is behind the networks of bots.

The charges against George Santos
George Santos sentenced to seven years in prison for fraud

Former US congressman George Santos has been sentenced to seven years in prison for fraud, US media reports.

The Republican pleaded guilty to fraud and identity theft this summer. The judge in the case, Joanna Seybert, justified the prison sentence by saying, among other things, that Santos has shown no remorse for his crimes.

– Where is the remorse? Where do I see it, she asked herself.

Santos was accused of having spent campaign money on luxury goods and lying about large parts of his background.

The Kashmir conflict
Witnesses to the attack: “Asked to be shot”

Survivors of the attack in Kashmir say that perpetrators came running out of the forest and began mowing down tourists, AFP reports. Tuesday's attack in the Indian-controlled area, in which 26 civilian tourists were killed, is the deadliest attack on civilians in the region in a long time.

Testimonies and reports in Indian media claim that it was a well-planned and targeted attack intended to send a message to the authorities in India. The perpetrators carried automatic weapons and body cameras to film the act.

A witness tells AFP that she heard a woman ask an attacker to shoot her after he executed her husband. Other survivors say that the attackers forced them to declare their religious affiliation, demanding that they recite the Islamic creed.

The act has escalated the conflict between India and Pakistan. India accuses Pakistan of supporting "cross-border terrorism", while Pakistan denies responsibility for the attack.

The Kashmir conflict

The conflict in Kashmir has been ongoing since 1947, when the area was divided between India and Pakistan after the withdrawal of the British Empire. Both countries claim the entire region and have fought wars several times and suffered violent clashes, with tens of thousands of deaths.
