The Ukrainian president describes it as a "potentially historic meeting".
According to sources, he took the opportunity to present several points of his own peace plan.
On Saturday, Pope Francis was buried in Rome. Hundreds of thousands of mourners gathered at St. Peter's Square and hundreds of world leaders were invited to participate in the historic ceremony.
But before the guests took their seats, Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky met for a meeting – inside St. Peter's Basilica.
In one photo, the two leaders were seen sitting on separate chairs, staring into each other's eyes. The photo is the first of the two of them together since the big fight in the White House.
The conversation lasted about 15 minutes, reports the New York Times.
According to sources, the Ukrainian president is said to have presented an alternative to Trump's criticized peace plan, the newspaper writes.
"A very symbolic meeting, which has the potential to be historic," Zelensky wrote on X after the meeting.
