Hearings on Israel's obligations begin today
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague is beginning hearings today on Israel's obligation to protect UN agencies in Gaza and its humanitarian obligations towards Palestinians.
The hearings, led by a panel of 15 judges, are expected to last a week. The judges include the United States, France, Russia, China and Saudi Arabia.
The UN has asked the judges to clarify Israel's legal obligations towards the UN and its agencies, international organizations or third party states to "ensure and facilitate the unhindered provision of urgently needed supplies essential for the survival of the Palestinian civilian population".
Since March 2, Israel has stopped all deliveries of supplies to the Gaza Strip.
