At least nine killed in Vancouver attack – perpetrator said he was “sorry”

At least nine people were killed in a Vancouver car attack, police announced in a post on X.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic event,” the police wrote.

A man in his 30s drove a car into a crowd during the Philippine “Lapu-Lapu” festival in memory of a Filipino national hero. An eyewitness tells CBC that the driver “just stepped on the gas pedal and drove into hundreds of people.”

The man was arrested after festival-goers held him at the scene. When he was taken away, he reportedly told people at the scene that he was “sorry.”

Police say they are “convinced” that this is not a terrorist attack.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney comments on the attack on X. “I am devastated by the terrible incident that occurred at the Lapu-Lapu festival,” he writes.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says that more than 20 people were injured in the Vancouver car attack on Sunday and nine people have died, several media outlets report.

– I am shocked and devastated, he says.

He says that the attack is every family's worst nightmare and that he shares their grief.

He says that a suspected perpetrator has been arrested. Authorities believe he acted alone and there is no danger to the public after the attack.

– We are investigating how and why this attack occurred, he adds.

Police have stated earlier on Sunday that they do not suspect a terrorist motive.

The perpetrator of last night’s car attack in Vancouver, Canada, has a history of mental illness. The police stated this at a press conference, while clarifying that it was not a terrorist attack.

The death toll has risen to eleven people. They are both men and women, says Police Chief Steve Rai. Several of them are “very young.”

– It is the darkest day in Vancouver’s history.

The perpetrator, who is in his 30s, drove his car straight into a crowd during the Philippine “Lapu-Lapu” festival.
