Pope Francis 1936–2025

Pope buried outside the Vatican – first in 120 years

Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelenskyj, the royal couple, Ulf Kristersson and other world leaders sat on benches in St. Peter's Square when the funeral ceremony was held for Pope Francis. His coffin was placed in St. Peter's Square and Cardinal Giovanni BattistaRe, 91, conducted the ceremony.

Almost two and a half hours later, the coffin began its journey through the streets of Rome to the applause of the people. It travels six kilometers to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore where Francis will then be buried. He is the first pope since 1903 to be buried outside the Vatican.

Early this morning, crowds rushed to St. Peter's Square to get good seats as they bid farewell to the head of the church. Among the Catholic mourners on site are many young people. One of them is Jean-Baptiste Leclezio, 22, from Lyon. He and hundreds of others slept outside the barriers last night, he tells AFP.

– We took mats and sleeping bags and slept here. Many sang all night, he says.

Another who made the pilgrimage to the funeral is Australian Eloise Bird, 38, and her four children.

– We know that this is not the end for the pope. God willing, he will go to heaven and there he will live forever, she says.

Exhorted to show “God’s peace” – world leaders shook hands

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who is leading the ceremony, urged the mourners to offer a peace greeting and to shake hands with each other. US President Donald Trump was seen shaking hands with, among others, France's Emmanuel Macron and Finland's President Alexander Stubb.

CNN's live broadcast also comments that the leaders of Iran and Syria shook hands with representatives from Israel.

- Quite an interesting diplomatic moment, in connection with everything else that is going on, says the anchor.
