The Kashmir conflict

Modi: Heinous act - the guilty must be held accountable

Indian special forces are carrying out a major operation on Wednesday to find the perpetrators behind yesterday's terrorist attack in Kashmir where at least 26 people were killed, AFP reports.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called the attack "heinous" and promised that the perpetrators will be held accountable. Modi also chose to cancel his state visit to Saudi Arabia after the attack.

The perpetrators attacked a popular tourist destination and opened fire on people with automatic weapons. The attack is described as the worst in the area in decades.

According to Reuters, the Kashmir Resistance militia group has claimed responsibility for the attack in posts on social media.

Police: Terror attack - tourists shot at close range

Four armed men shot tourists at close range in the attack in the Indian part of Kashmir in the Himalayas, police told AP.

26 people are believed to have been killed and over 30 injured, many of them seriously. Most of the victims are said to be Indians.

Police are describing the attack as a terrorist attack and are pointing to militants fighting against Indian rule.

The conflict in Kashmir has been going on for decades, with fighting between Islamist groups and Indian security forces. Both India and Pakistan claim the region but in practice each country rules part of it.

At least 26 dead in attack on tourists in India

Gunmen attacked tourists in the Indian part of Kashmir in the Himalayas on Tuesday and the death toll has risen to at least 26.

The attacks took place at a viewpoint in Pahalgam, which is sometimes called the “Switzerland of India”, writes the BBC.

The place could not be reached by car, so injured and dead tourists had to be taken down from the mountain on horses and all-terrain vehicles, witnesses say.

Since the 1990s, an armed insurgency against disputed Indian rule in the region has led to tens of thousands of deaths.
