Middle East Crisis Israel vs Iran

Iran demands that the US and Israel be formally held accountable

Iran demands that the UN Security Council recognize Israel and the US as guilty of initiating the twelve-day war, reports AFP.

In a letter, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi states that they consider both countries to be the aggressors and demands financial compensation for the damage.

The US and Israel have justified the attacks by saying that Iran was on the verge of acquiring nuclear weapons, which has not been proven by an independent party.

Analysis: A defeat and a humiliation for Iran

After the Israeli and American attacks on Iran, the country now faces a crossroads. This is what the New York Times' Roger Cohen and the Frankfurter Rundschau's Felix Busjaeger agree on.

Cohen wonders what a "shaky Islamic republic with economic difficulties" will do in the future. The country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, insists that the country won the twelve-day war. At the same time, Iran has lost allies in both Lebanon and Yemen, and has had nuclear facilities bombed.

The Ayatollah is now facing the biggest test of his 36 years in power, Cohen writes.

Busjaeger writes that the extensive attacks by Israel and the United States have also been a severe blow to the "backbone of power", the Revolutionary Guard, which has a high position in Iran.

The Israeli intelligence service Mossad appears to have infiltrated the Revolutionary Guard before the attacks. It is both a military defeat and a humiliation for Ali Khamenei, says Busjaeger.

"The fact that hostile agents have apparently been able to act freely inside Iran undermines the Revolutionary Guard's position as the regime's protector," he writes.
