Opposition: The president is turning us into a monarchy
Many Togolese residents are outraged after President Faure Gnassingbé decided last month to shift power in the country from the presidency to the head of the council of ministers. At the same time, he was appointed president.
The role is appointed by majority vote in parliament and a person can hold the position for as long as they want.
Opposition leader Paul Dodji Apevon says that Gnassingbé “has decided to transform Togo into a monarchy.”
The decision has led to protests in the capital, Lomé, where people have called for the president’s resignation.
Seven dead after protests against the president
At least seven people have been killed and many injured in connection with the large protests against Togo’s incumbent President Faure Gnassingbé that were organized this week, AFP writes, citing a statement from human rights groups.
The people were reportedly found in a river in the capital Lomé, where the protests took place. The groups condemn the actions of the security forces.
Since Gnassingbé changed the constitution to give himself more power, many residents have been sharply critical.
