Political situation in Serbia

President hits back: “Serbia has won”

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is hitting back at the around 140,000 protesters who demanded his resignation in connection with large protests in the capital Belgrade.

“Serbia has won, and Serbia cannot be defeated with violence as some have wanted,” he said in a speech according to AFP.

He accused the protesters of committing “terror” and promised that more would be arrested. Vucic, who has become increasingly authoritarian and has strengthened ties with Russia, has long accused the protesters of being part of a foreign attempt to overthrow the government.

Large protests against the country’s President Aleksandar Vucic were held in the Serbian capital Belgrade on Saturday, several media outlets report. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets.

The protests turned violent at times when demonstrators clashed with police who responded with pepper spray. Several people, both police officers and protesters, were injured.

Dissatisfaction with Vucic has been growing for several months. The protests were initially organized by students demanding new elections. Over time, more and more groups have joined, writes SVT Nyheter.

Vucic has been in office for over ten years and has become increasingly authoritarian over time and has strengthened ties to Russia and China, writes AP.
