Historic hurricane is approaching – then it could reach Sweden
Hurricane Melissa is expected to be the strongest to ever sweep over Jamaica.
And the storm could also reach Sweden.
– If the latest is to be believed, it could come north quite quickly, says meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist.
A historic decision was made on Monday morning.
Hurricane Melissa has been classified as a Category 5 hurricane by the US National Hurricane Center. That is the highest number on the institute's scale.
The island nation of Jamaica has never experienced anything like it before.
– It breaks the record as the strongest ever. Such a powerful hurricane has never been recorded over Jamaica before. They haven't even had a Category 3, says Lasse Rydqvist, meteorologist at Klart.
The powerful hurricane has already swept over parts of the Caribbean. In the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the storm has caused at least four deaths. On Monday and Tuesday, Jamaica and Cuba are expected to be hit hard by the storm's advance.
- It could probably be very serious. Especially in this area where you're not really used to such powerful storms coming over land, says Lasse Rydqvist.
Now the Caribbean islands are preparing for major flooding.
- There will be very strong winds above all. But the amount of rain can also have major consequences. In Jamaica, one meter of rain is expected in a very short time, says Lasse Rydqvist.
When the hurricane reaches Sweden
Sweden may also face Melissa.
According to Lasse Rydqvist, the hurricane can move quickly north after its visit to the Caribbean. The storm is expected to reach France and the British Isles early next week, and then approach Sweden.
But the effects here at home do not currently look to be particularly serious, according to Lasse Rydqvist.
– For us, it may be more of a classic low pressure in November. Windy and rainy, he says.
