A "bomb cyclone" threatens the United States.
115 million Americans are warned of the life-threatening weather change.
- This is not a joke, says President Joe Biden.
Authorities in the United States are warning that a "bomb cyclone" with heavy snow, strong winds and dangerously cold temperatures is headed for the country.
The temperature is expected to drop to minus 40 degrees in some areas and there is a risk of frostbite within minutes, writes NBC.
“Cold winds of this magnitude can cause frostbite in less than five minutes if care is not taken. Hypothermia is also possible if you are exposed to the cold for a long time," read the weather service's warning on Tuesday.
Nearly 115 million people are covered by the blizzard warnings, which are expected to hit eight states. Thousands of flights have already been canceled before the Christmas holiday.
Biden: Now leave
US President Joe Biden is now appealing to Americans threatened by the "dangerous" and "threatening" weather to heed local warnings.
- This is not like a winter's day, you know like when you were a child. Please take this storm seriously, he says and continues:
- If you have travel plans, leave now. This is not a joke.

Out on the roads, low temperatures and lightning sleet can become a danger for car travelers. The combination of snow and wind will make visibility between laps almost non-existent, according to the Washington Post.
Coldest Christmas since 1983
Authorities in Montana are warning of traffic hazards after abandoned vehicles are found across the state. The worst is the situation in the city of Bozeman, where the temperature has dropped to minus 33 degrees, reports
At the same time, the central parts of Florida will experience their coldest Christmas since 1983 with temperatures down to minus one degree on Christmas Day.
It is when the low pressure comes closer to the ground that the so-called "bomb cyclone" is expected to strike. According to the National Weather Service NWS, the event is something that only happens once in a generation.
