"No no no"
Biden also mentioned Putin in his speech and what he had previously said about Finland and Sweden's NATO application. Among other things, Biden highlighted that Putin thought he would get the "Finlandization of NATO".
- He instead got a NATO-affiliated Finland and Sweden.
He described Putin as an "autocrat" and that these only understand one word:
- No no no. No, you can't take my land. No, you can't take my freedom. No, you can't take my future
- Putin thought NATO would split, but instead NATO is more united than ever before. Putin was wrong, he adds.
Biden said that Ukraine, the West and NATO have been tested for the past year after the war in Ukraine.
- A year later, we know the answer: We were strong and we stood together, said Biden.
"It's a tragedy"
The president promised more sanctions against Russia later this week.
He also praised Poland's support for war-torn Ukraine.
- This war was never necessary, it is a tragedy.
Vladimir Putin also gave a speech on Tuesday.
The speech was his first in the National Assembly since April 2021. There he criticized the West, which he believes has started the war.
In the speech, Putin also announced that Russia is pausing the agreement on nuclear disarmament with the United States.
- We must be ready to resume nuclear weapons tests if the US does so, Putin said.
