Middle East Crisis

Gaza war
Proposal for a long ceasefire in Gaza is reportedly on the table

A Hamas representative tells AFP that the group has sent a delegation to Cairo where new talks on a possible ceasefire in the Gaza war are underway. According to the source, “new ideas” to reach an agreement are on the table.

The BBC reports, citing sources, that the mediators have presented a framework for a ceasefire that extends five to seven years.

Hamas, which is labeled a terrorist organization, rejected an offer from Israel last week because the group could not agree to demands that it be completely disarmed without sufficient guarantees that Israel would end the war.

Gaza documentary to be screened in Cannes in May – main character killed

Journalist Fatima Hassouna learned last week that the documentary she is part of will be shown at the Cannes film festival in May. Less than 24 hours later, on Wednesday, she was killed in an Israeli strike.

Seven of her family members died. Her parents survived the attack, but both were seriously injured and are in intensive care, the Gaza health ministry confirmed to CNN.

“If I die, I want a resounding death, I don’t want to be part of breaking news or a number. I want a death that the world hears,” Hassouna wrote in an Instagram post in August 2024.

Hassouna has been documenting the war from the streets of Gaza for 18 months.

Demonstrations
Mahmoud Khalil not allowed to attend son’s birth

Mahmoud Khalil was arrested on March 10 and has been in detention since then after organizing demonstrations against the Gaza war at Columbia University.

Khalil was barred from attending the birth of his first child on Monday after immigration officials denied him permission, according to emails obtained by CNN.

“My son and I should not spend his first days on earth without Mahmoud,” Khalil’s wife, Noor Abdalla, told CNN.

Khalil has not been charged with any crime, but the Trump administration has accused him of supporting Hamas, although they have not presented any evidence in court.
