Trump: Putin said he would avenge the attack
Donald Trump has had a 75-minute phone call with Vladimir Putin, he writes on Truth Social.
They discussed, among other things, Ukraine's drone attack on Russian aircraft, and Putin emphasized "very strongly" that Russia will respond to it, Trump writes, adding:
"It was a good conversation, but not one that will lead to immediate peace."
Iran was also discussed during the conversation, and Putin is said to have opened up to participating in talks on a new nuclear agreement between Washington and Tehran, according to Trump.
EU wants to extend protection for Ukrainian refugees
The EU Commission proposes to extend the mechanism for temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees until March 4, 2027, reports AFP.
At the same time, it urges member states to "begin preparing for a transition away from temporary protection when certain criteria have been met."
The Migration Directive was activated on 4 March 2022, shortly after Russia's invasion, and grants Ukrainian refugees the right to temporary residence and work permits in the EU. 4.3 million refugees are currently covered.
