“Petty thieves” suspected of billion-dollar heist at the Louvre
The four people who have been formally charged with their involvement in the spectacular billion-dollar heist at the Louvre in Paris have been described as “petty thieves” by the prosecutor. Two of them are a couple who have a child together, French media report.
“Their profiles do not match those usually associated with the higher echelons of organized crime,” prosecutor Laure Beccuau told the France Info television channel.
The 38-year-old woman in the couple denies any involvement and is, according to Beccuau, desperate about what will happen to her and the child. The 37-year-old man has not said anything during questioning.
Both the man in the couple and the two men who were arrested before them have previously been convicted of theft. Another suspect is believed to be at large. The jewels, which are worth almost one billion kronor, have not been found.
Two Suspects Convicted in Same Theft Case in 2015
Two of the suspects in the Louvre jewel heist in France were both convicted in the same theft case ten years ago, prosecutor Laure Beccau said, according to the AP.
One of the suspects, whose DNA was found in the basket of the stepladder used in the heist, has a criminal record with eleven convictions, ten of which are for theft.
The other has 15 convictions, two of which are for theft.
“The interesting thing about these records is that when we compare them, we see that they were both involved in the same theft case, for which they were convicted in Paris in 2015,” Beccau said.
