Tensions in the Caribbean

Trump: Venezuelan airspace should be considered closed

US President Donald Trump writes on Truth Social that Venezuelan airspace should be considered closed.

"To all airlines, pilots, drug traffickers and human traffickers, please consider the airspace over and around Venezuela to be closed in its entirety," Trump writes, partly in capital letters.

It is unclear what Trump means by his post. In recent months, the US has bombed several boats from Venezuela that it claims were on their way to the US with drugs. Recently, Trump said that the country plans to stop drug smugglers from Venezuela "even on land".

Hegseth: Boat attacks are intended to kill

The US attacks on alleged drug smuggling boats in the Caribbean Sea have always been intended to kill, writes Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on X.

This is a comment on new information in US media that Hegseth first ordered a missile attack on a boat on September 2, and then another when it became clear that two survivors were clinging to the burning boat.

Hegseth does not confirm this detail, but writes:

"The express purpose is to stop deadly drugs, destroy drug boats and kill the narco-terrorists who are poisoning the American people. All the smugglers we kill belong to terrorist organizations."

The boat attacks in international waters have been legally questioned by the UN and human rights experts.
