There, National Guardsmen Sarah Beckstrom, 20 and Andrew Wolfe, 24, were patrolling. Both were hit by gunfire and critically injured.
– I’m holding her hand right now. She’s not going to survive. She’s not going to recover, Gary Beckstrom told the New York Times.
“Pray for my son”
Andrew Wolfe is a staff sergeant in the Air Force and Sarah Beckstrom was a specialist in the US Army.
They had both been deployed to Washington since August, when President Trump ordered troops to the capital in an effort to combat crime.
According to several media outlets, the shooter was armed with a handgun.
– All we need is for people to pray for my son, a relative of Andrew Wolfe told the newspaper.
The 24-year-old is described as a “great guy” by his neighbors.
– We always took care of each other. The best neighbors you could ask for, really. This was really a shock, the neighbor told CNN.
The shooter is identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29. He is linked to the CIA, according to The Guardian.

On Thursday, the shooter was identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal. He is linked to the CIA, The Guardian reports.
The shooter worked with CIA-backed military units during the US war in Afghanistan, according to the newspaper.
The act is being investigated as a terrorist crime.
