Tower collapse in Rome

Medieval tower in Rome has collapsed – one seriously injured

A medieval tower in central Rome has partially collapsed, reports the AP. The tower is located near the Roman Forum.

The collapse occurred in connection with repair work and at least one person is seriously injured.

According to Corriere della Sera, three people have been rescued while a fourth is trapped after the collapse. A second collapse occurred in connection with the rescue operation in front of spectators gathered at the site.

The tower, Torre dei Conti, was built by Pope Innocent III's brother in the 13th century.

Rescue operation tries to reach trapped worker

Firefighters have been trying for several hours to reach a worker who was trapped when a medieval tower in Rome partially collapsed on Monday, reports the AP. The rescue operation is being complicated by new collapses, which also pose a danger to the lives of the firefighters.

They were able to communicate with the trapped worker and send in a barrier to protect him from further collapses.

“This will take time. We have to try to save this person while reducing the risk to rescue workers,” Rome prefect Lamberto Giannini told Corriere della Sera.

The collapse occurred during repairs to the tower. One of the workers is hospitalized in critical condition.
