The US intends to withdraw protection from Europe – and “cultivate resistance” by supporting nationalist parties.

Something that makes EU leaders furious.

– We do not need advice from any country, says German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

The US’s annual update of the security strategy around the world has hit like a bomb.

From 2027, Donald Trump  wants to hand over NATO responsibility to Europe and withdraw its forces and weapons.

Something that is dismissed as “unreasonable demands” by European analysts.

At the same time, Trump states that Europe is facing an “annihilation of civilization”.

In the policy documents, the US claims that the EU is “stifling political freedom” and that it should ally itself with “patriotic EU parties”. A code word for right-wing extremist movements, writes the New York Times.

The US should “cultivate resistance across Europe” by supporting political parties that fight against migration and promote nationalism, it says.

Both Reform UK and Alternative for Germany, which German intelligence has classified as an extremist party, can be included.

“The growing influence of patriotic European parties certainly gives reason for great optimism. Our goal should be to help Europe correct its current development”.

Just hours after the documents were published, shocked EU leaders protested.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul says that they “don’t need advice from any country or party.”

“The United States is Germany’s most important ally in NATO, but issues like freedom of speech, freedom of opinion and how we organize ourselves in our liberal society in Germany are not part of that,” he says.

“Totally unacceptable”

Italian MEP Brando Benifei, who belongs to the Democratic Party and heads the delegation for relations with the United States, says it is a direct call for electoral interference in EU countries.

“It is a frontal attack on the EU. The documents are completely unacceptable and full of extreme, shocking phrases.”

Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) tells Aftonbladet that they are currently analyzing the US national security strategy.

“Our relationship with the US is long-term and remains central to Sweden’s and Europe’s security and prosperity. It is clear that Europe needs to take greater responsibility for our security, competitiveness and future. We understand that and act accordingly. We have our own interests to protect.”
