Middle East Crisis Gaza War

High stakes as Trump meets Netanyahu in Florida

US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are set to meet in Florida on Monday. According to the AP, the White House is aiming to strengthen the current ceasefire in Gaza, which could be in danger when a second phase is negotiated.

The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has recently shown signs of weakness. Both sides have accused each other of violating it. At the same time, there is some disagreement between the US, Israel and several Arab countries regarding the path forward for a second phase.

Mona Yacoubian, director of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, tells the AP that it will be a challenge for Trump to reach an agreement with Netanyahu.

“How he does it, what kind of pressure he puts on Netanyahu, I think will be important to watch,” she says.

The Gaza ceasefire – the point

  • The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect on 10 October 2025, after both sides approved the first phase of a peace agreement.
  • Despite the ceasefire, over 300 people, including around 70 children, have been killed in Gaza and both sides have accused each other of violating the agreement.
  • Israel has withdrawn to the so-called Yellow Line in Gaza, but the border is unclear and several civilians have been killed as they approached the area.
  • According to the UN-backed IPC, access to humanitarian aid has improved since the ceasefire, but a state of emergency still prevails in Gaza and access to food and shelter is inadequate.
  • Negotiations on the second phase of the ceasefire are ongoing, but questions about Hamas’s disarmament and the future governance of Gaza have complicated the process.
