Russian invasion Negotiations

After the meeting in Florida – allies to gather in Paris

The countries that are part of the “coalition of the willing” will meet in Paris in early January to discuss how each country can concretely help Ukraine. This is what French President Emmanuel Macron writes on X.

He writes that he and several other European leaders participated in a telephone meeting with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyj and US President Donald Trump in connection with the two presidents meeting in Florida on Sunday.

During the conversation, security guarantees for Ukraine in a possible peace agreement with Russia were discussed. After the meeting, Trump said that “great progress” had been made in reaching an end to the war in Ukraine, without going into what the progress was about.

Zelenskyj: US offers 15 years of security guarantees - I have asked for 50 years

The US has offered security guarantees for 15 years within the framework of a Ukrainian peace plan, says President Volodymyr Zelenskyj according to Reuters.

The Ukrainian leader also states that he has asked Donald Trump for security guarantees for up to 50 years.

Zelensky's statement comes the day after the two presidents met in the US to discuss the peace plan. Trump described the meeting as "fantastic" and said that they are now "much closer" to an agreement, but did not give any concrete details about what they have reached. Zelenskyj was also positive after the meeting.

Analysis: Much talk but seemingly no progress

Trump and Zelensky – especially Trump – talked about great progress after the meeting in Mar-a-Lago, but they do not seem to have gotten anywhere on the real key issues. This is according to Sky News USA correspondent Mark Stone.

– It is actually quite difficult to interpret what is happening, because outwardly it looks like no progress has been made today.

He notes that it is at least positive that no setbacks seem to have occurred. So does Danish TV2's USA correspondent Lotte Mejlhede.

The meeting could very well end in nothing and the war could continue for several years – but it could have gone worse, she writes.

“We could have had a (American) president who does not feel that Ukraine seriously wants peace. After all, we are not there.”

There was not much new that emerged from the press conference, says Norwegian TV2's US expert Eirik Bergesen.

Trump came up with various distractions – including talk about the 2020 US election – but said nothing about what pressure he is prepared to put on Putin, he says and continues:

– And then it is difficult to see an end to the war.
