Big victory for the incumbent prime minister in Kosovo
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti was a big winner in Sunday's by-election. With 99 percent of the votes counted, his Vetevendosje ("Self-Determination") party has 49.4 percent, Bloomberg reports.
- The result is not final and I do not think Kurti can form a government by himself, but it will be very easy for him to govern with a small coalition, Ismet Kryeziu of the Kosovo Democratic Institute think tank told Reuters.
Four new parties entered the national assembly in the by-election. The by-election was called after the country had been in a political deadlock since the February election. Kurti then received 42 percent of the vote and has not been able to form a government.
Kosovo votes again after months of political deadlock
Ten months after the last election, Kosovo is going to by-elections today. The election was called in November after Prime Minister Albin Kurti failed to form a government after the February election.
Kurti's Vetevendosje party is leading in the polls, but it is uncertain whether it will gain a majority. If the political deadlock continues, the country's economic crisis risks worsening, writes AP. The country does not yet have a budget for next year.
The main opposition parties LDK and PDK have accused Kurti of pushing the country further away from its allies the United States and the EU since he took power in 2021.
