More than half of the United States will be affected by the winter weather, which brings with it large amounts of snow, extensive icing and dangerous cold, reports NBC News.The winter storm stretches from Massachusetts in the north to Texas in the south and at least 172 million people are covered by some form of weather warning. The storm is expected to lead to prolonged power outages and difficult conditions on roads and railways.
Residents are stockpiling groceries in several states and images, which are being spread on social media, show store shelves gaping empty. At least twelve states have declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm's arrival.
