Greenland crisis

US threats
Frederiksen to Greenland to discuss Trump

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will travel to Greenland on Friday to discuss the island's future, after Trump backed down from his threats, Bloomberg reports.

The announcement comes after a meeting with EU leaders and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

In a post on X, the Danish Prime Minister writes:

"We agree that NATO should increase its involvement in the Arctic. Defense and security in the Arctic is a matter of concern for the entire alliance."

At the same time, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has met with his American counterpart Marco Rubio and US Vice President JD Vance. The parties agreed on Thursday to establish a working group.

Sources: It is now obvious to the EU that everything has changed

At Thursday night's EU summit in Brussels, it was obvious that something had changed. After all the trips around Greenland this week, there was an overall feeling that a new world order has replaced the one that has been in place since World War II, five sources tell Politico.

– This is a defining moment. It is shock therapy. Europe cannot go back to how it was before, says one of the sources.

Another source says that Europe is now entering a new era.

– We will not trust them anymore, at least not for the next three years. This was a test. We have learned a lesson.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated on Thursday that relations with the United States have taken a “significant hit” as a result of Donald Trump’s threatening rhetoric.

Information: The operation in Greenland was accelerated ahead of the fateful meeting with Vance

The extensive military operation in Greenland is part of a larger plan to deter the United States from an attack, according to information to DR. The operation, which goes by the name Arctic Endurance, is also about getting the soldiers ready to defend the island with live ammunition.

The operation has been planned for a long time. But when it became clear that the so-called "meeting of fate" between US Vice President JD Vance and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen would take place, the operation was brought forward. The meeting was held in Washington on January 14.

The Danish soldiers were informed of the operation the same week it was to begin. The Swedish Armed Forces were also reportedly invited early last week, according to information provided to SVT. The Swedish defense leadership then made a quick decision to send planning officers to Greenland after dialogue with the government.

Nordic prime ministers cancel Greenland visit

Today, the five Nordic leaders were to visit Greenland's capital, Nuuk, together, but the visit has been canceled. This is reported by the Althingi.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's (M) press secretary says that the trip has been postponed by Denmark. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre elaborates:

"In light of the contacts between the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States and NATO, the Nordic countries have decided this afternoon that the trip will be postponed to a later date," he writes to the Norwegian Althing on Thursday.
