Llamas at the center of new drug research

Llamas are increasingly used in drug research because their unique antibodies, so-called nanobodies, can reach biological targets that regular antibodies cannot. Bloomberg reports.

- They work almost like Lego, where you can put them together in many different ways, says Mark Lappe, CEO of the American biotechnology company Inhibrx Biosciences.

The technology is attracting billions of dollars in investments from companies such as Sanofi, Astra Zeneca and Eli Lilly, with possible treatments for cancer, autoimmune diseases and pain.

The field is still young but is seen as a promising tool in the development of new drugs.
