The Zikim border crossing in the northern part of Gaza with Israel has been opened for the first time in 40 days, the UN says.

The important border post is crucial for bringing in provisions and necessities for those in need in the Gaza Strip. But the crossing was closed in connection with the US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.

The reason was “security measures” according to Israel, which at the same time closed all other border crossings.

Kerem Shalom and Rafah in the southern part of Gaza were reopened later, but Zikim only opened on Monday.

“The opening helps meet the critical need to get supplies directly to northern Gaza,” said Stéphane Dujarric, a UN spokesman.

Deliveries from the UN food program WFP and UNICEF, among others, were able to resume on Monday.
