The war in Sudan

Analysis: The World is Watching as Sudan Falls into the Abyss

International media are drawing attention to the fact that the war in Sudan is now entering its fourth year. A forgotten but ongoing crisis, writes DR's Africa correspondent Søren Bendixen in an analysis.

"If you look at the number of people starving and forced to live as refugees, Sudan should obviously be number one when world leaders try to focus their energy on making the world a better place."

Der Spiegel's Africa correspondent Muriel Kalisch also notes that the world is largely watching passively as the "generals' war" plunges an entire country into the abyss.

There is also no indication that an end to the war is imminent, she writes.

"Both sides are receiving support with money and weapons from foreign actors, and both see themselves as Sudan's legitimate rulers."

Britain calls for an end to arms to Sudan

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper wants to see international cooperation to stop the flow of arms to Sudan, Reuters reports.

– Frankly, the international community has failed the people of Sudan, says Cooper at the conference on the crisis in the country that began in Berlin today.

UN Sudan chief Denise Brown did not mince words either, calling the actions of the outside world “fucking unacceptable”.

– It feels like every conversation about Sudan is about the humanitarian crisis. How about focusing on finding an end to the war?

The war in Sudan enters its fourth year: “The world has failed”

On Sunday, the war in Sudan will enter its fourth year and there is still no end in sight to the conflict, writes AP.

“This cruel and humiliating anniversary marks another year in which the world has failed to live up to Sudan’s demands,” said UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher.

At least 59,000 people have been killed in the conflict and around 34 million are in need of emergency aid, according to the UN.
