Italy pauses defense agreement with Israel

Italy is pausing its defense agreement with Israel, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said, according to AFP.

Italy has previously been one of Israel’s closest allies in Europe, but recently Prime Minister Meloni has criticized Israel’s warfare in Lebanon, Iran and Gaza.

According to Reuters sources, today’s announcement also means that the countries are ending all cooperation regarding the training of soldiers. Israeli military sources that Ynet has spoken to, however, downplay the importance of Italy’s announcement.

–This is not a defense agreement but a memorandum without real content. The decision has no practical significance, says one of them.

The proposal was presented in January and has been described as unusual in Europe, where the trend is otherwise for countries to tighten their migration laws.
