US President Donald Trump is receiving criticism from within his own ranks after he published an AI-generated image in which he appears to be depicted as Jesus. Now he explains the idea behind the image.

In the image, Trump, piously dressed in a white shirt and red robe, was seen holding his hand over the forehead of a sick man. In the background, Trump's supporters, the American flag and the Statue of Liberty were visible, among other things.

This caused several conservative Christian activists and commentators to go crazy and, among other things, accuse Trump of blasphemy, reports The Hill.

Trump himself says that it was "not a depiction" of Jesus.

“It would portray me as a doctor, making people feel better,” Trump told reporters outside the White House.

The image, which Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday, was deleted on Monday.

Trump in storm with Christians after AI-Jesus image

US President Donald Trump has managed to alienate parts of his Christian voter base, after a stormy day in which he, among other things, ended up in a fight with the Pope.

When Pope Leo XIV criticized the US and Israel's war on Iran this weekend, Trump responded with a post on the Truth Social platform. In the long post, he wrote, among other things, that the Pope is "weak when it comes to crime and terrible at foreign policy".

The post also included an AI-generated image that appears to resemble Trump to Jesus, which has angered many Christian Americans.

The image was taken down from Truth Social late on Monday morning local time. Trump later explained away the Jesus image during a press conference.

- It was intended to portray me as a doctor, who helps people feel better. And I actually do that - I make them feel much better, he tells reporters.
