Debate over Trump's mental health flares up – again

The debate over Donald Trump's mental health has been rekindled by Trump's talk of wiping out Iran's civilization and his public spat with the Pope, writes the New York Times.

Democrats have long claimed that Trump is unstable, but criticism has also spread to parts of the Republican right this year.

"He is clearly not feeling well," Stephanie Grisham, one of the president's former press secretaries, wrote on X last week.

Posts like this follow serious criticism from several of Donald Trump's former close allies. Podcaster Candace Owens, former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and media personality Alex Jones have all openly questioned Trump's mental health.

Trump has responded by attacking his critics and claiming that his mental health is excellent.

Analysis: Trump-Jesus tried to turn the page with bizarre hamburger event

Donald Trump caused a stir when he shared a picture of himself as Jesus, according to analyses in several newspapers.

The picture, in which Trump appears to heal a sick man with holy light while the American flag flutters in the background, is very strange, writes The Independent's Holly Baxter. The crisis management that followed may, however, be Trump's strangest move yet, she believes.

Shortly after the Jesus picture was deleted, Donald Trump called what Baxter describes as a slightly bizarre press conference where he accepted two large bags of takeout food and advertised his abolished tax on tips. In between rounds, he answered questions about the war with Iran. According to Baxter, the idea was to divert attention from Jesusgate.

“There are weeks in American politics when the symbolism writes itself, and there are weeks when it seems to have been written by an intern with an absurdist sense of humor and a high fever,” she writes.

In the Washington Post, Philip Kennicott writes that the controversial image apparently sent many more signals than intended – perhaps most of all to Trump’s Christian supporters.

“Among those signals: a clear sense of desperation. In the swift and angry reactions to the meme, one could also sense a coalition that is about to crack.”
